Have you ever driven through parts of Dallas that make you stop dead in your tracks? Well, usually I wouldn't either for fear of being seriously injured if I had to stop at a red light. BUT, today I did.
Today, I stopped dead in my tracks and watched a man literally roll out of a filthy sleeping bag, wearing tethered rags, and carrying a Bible. I watched him sit up, stretch out, and pray.
If you know me at all, you know my heart aches for those in third world countries. That I can't get international adoption out of my head. I would love to go on every mission trip around the world, and I am a complete sucker for anything that says "all proceeds go to..." and list a third world country, especially if it involves children.
Today though, I couldn't help to finish my drive to work in silence thinking about this man. I don't know his name, or what his story is but he needs help. Now, God only knows what he has done in his life to put him in such a place but that is not for me to judge. I am sure he has traveled a very long, hard, rough, dark, road to where he is now. I am also sure that he needs prayers.
This man is not the only man. There were women on the corners, selling their bodies, their God given bodies, for money, drugs, alcohol. There were other men in dumpsters, cardboard boxes, and the middle of the street. I have seen this same scene many of times, but for some reason this tethered man with the Bible made me take a step back.
While I am praying for those in third world countries, I also need to pray for those in my own backyard. These people need God in a bad way. South Dallas could be seen as a third world country in itself. A third world country filled with prostitution, diseases, poverty, sick children, rape, murder, crime, homeless, hungry, dying. These people need our prayers.
